Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment




The Level 1 Award in Health and Safety in a Construction Environment qualification is appropriate for individuals wishing to apply for the Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) Green Card and to access construction sites in the UK as a non-skilled worker.


In July 2014 CSCS introduced a new requirement for applicants to achieve a formal knowledge based qualification, the ‘Health and Safety in a Construction Environment’ Award. Achievement of this Award will demonstrate the applicant’s understanding of key issues affecting safe working practices on UK construction sites.

Health and Safety in a Construction Environment






Candidates must demonstrate the level of knowledge described in the unit. Assessment is the process of measuring a candidate’s knowledge and understanding against the standards set in the qualification.


Assessment guidance is included to assure consistency, specific assessment requirements for this qualification are included on page 10.


Each candidate is required to produce evidence which demonstrates their achievement of all of the learning outcomes and assessment criteria for each unit.


Evidence can include:             

  • assignments/projects/reports
  • worksheets
  • portfolio of evidence
  • record of oral and/or written questioning
  • candidate test papers



How we deliver this qualification:




The course is offered for one day with in-person lessons, tutorials, exercises and pracrtice sessions.


You will complete short answers to knowledge questions at home and submit via email or a shared Drop Box Folder. You will return to college for one more day where we go through your workbook and help you with understanding of all assessment criteria. 


To apply for a green card you also need to sit for a CITB heath and safety operative test at another venue where we can help you to arrange. The preparation for the CITB operartive test is charged at an extra fee.
